Sapphire and the Vaporizer

so it's not perfect. but I do like the general idea I have here....

12-year-old Sapphire Maria Caraway was just a normal girl living in a normal house on a normal farm, she had 1 brother and 1 sister, a loving mom and dad, her very own horse; a Friesian named Talila, and a deep Faith in God. She had everything a girl could want, and she never took it for granted. But the only thing that she really wanted next to a horse, was some powers.

Just before dawn one day, Sapphire got up, got dressed, and went outside to the barn, and walked into Talila’s stall, the 4-year-old Friesian mare nudged her, Sapphire smiled,

“Looking for a snack, aren’t you?” she reached into her pocket, pulled out an apple and offered it to the mare, who gobbled it right up, Sapphire giggled. “Don’t be greedy, Talila!” then, when she filled Talila’s, and the other horse’s feedbags, she felt a pulse of energy go through her, then it stopped, she was surprised; what was it? She hurried outside and behind the barn; she couldn’t explain it, but something was in her hand that wanted to get out.

Once outside, she pushed her hand up towards the sky and opened it-and watched as a bolt of blue light came out of it. She was shocked,

                “How did this happen?”

                “Neigh!”

Sapphire turned around and gasped again as Talila sprouted wings and took to the sky.

“Talila! How do you do that!?”

in response, Talila landed next to her and her wings disappeared. Instantly, Sapphire knew she couldn’t tell anyone about this.

At breakfast that morning, Mr. Caraway put down his coffee and sighed, “The newspaper is late, I always like reading it with my coffee every morning.”

“Well, when the newspaper does come, then I’ll make you another cup.” His wife responded.

Sapphire’s 18-year-old brother Matthew, also sighed, “They  weren’t late yesterday.”

Diane, Sapphire’s sensible 14-year-old sister, said, “ They probably have no news, so they’re looking for some.” Then, turning to her father, she added “You can have coffee and read the newspaper for lunch.”

Sapphire finished her breakfast quickly, “Can I go out for a ride please?”

                “Alright, be back by lunch.”

                Yes mom.”

Sapphire cleared her dishes and left.

Riding Talila was one of the things that made Sapphire happy, suddenly, Talila spread her wings and took to the sky; Sapphire smiled and hugged Talila,

                “Oh Talila, you’re the greatest.”

                Talila whinnied.

Then Sapphire talked with Talila, “I wonder why we have these powers Talila, why us? Why not anyone else…” suddenly, her mind sharpened-was it just her, or did she just sense that President Obama was in trouble? “Come on Talila! On to the White House! The president is in trouble!”

When they reached the White House, Sapphire could barely see because it was so dark. Sapphire gulped, but she nudged Talila on,

“Come on Talila, let’s go in.”

the yard was empty when horse and girl entered, the Guards must have run away. Sapphire thought.

The doors looked like they was blown open, Sapphire dismounted, and they walked inside. Once there, Sapphire turned to Talila and said,

“Talila, go see if you can find the President and his family, once you have, get them out to the street.” Talila nudged her as if to say, but what about you? Sapphire looked forward, “I’m going to try to find the villain.”

Once Talila had flown off, Sapphire hurried upstairs. Once there, she looked to the right, it looked all right, except for it was burnt, but when she looked to the left, it looked much, much, darker, Sapphire hurried down the left hall.

When Sapphire got closer to the Lincoln Bedroom, she heard cackling laughter, she ran towards the noise and cautiously stepped inside.

“Well, well, well.” A voice from the shadows said, “What do we have here? Have you come to stop me?”

“Yes.” Sapphire said bravely.

The voice laughed, “My dear, no one defeats The Vaporizer.”

“The Vaporizer? Never heard of you.”

“Well of course you haven’t; nobody has-that’s why those lousy security guards  ran away-you see, they’re scared of the things they don’t know.”

“You’re the only lousy thing around here.” Sapphire shot back, “Why go the White House? Why not the Queen of England’s house?” she added sarcastically.

“Me? Lousy? Just who do you think you are?” The voice bellowed.

“Sapphire Caraway, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.”

The Vaporizer stepped out of the shadows, Sapphire gasped, The Vaporizer wasn’t just a scary villain; he was an evil, black, spirit.

The Vaporizer laughed, “You didn’t think you could win so easily, did you?”

Sapphire didn’t know what to do, so she used her first instinct and turned to run back down the hall, then she sped downstairs. The Vaporizer followed shouting,

“No one sees the Vaporizer and lives!”

Then he cast his evil magic at her, but she dodged just in time. However, when she looked down, she realized that she was a foot off the ground! She gasped, though she had no time to marvel, the Vaporizer just threw more of his evil magic at her, she quickly dodged. Then she threw some of her own magic at him, he did the same, the two powers met in the middle.

Then, on the spur of the moment, a crazy idea occurred in her head-it was a saying her Sunday school teacher said would frighten any anti-Christ beings, or spirits, away; so she said it,

“In the Name of Jesus Christ, be gone!”

The Vaporizer’s ears sharpened, “What did you say?”

Sapphire said it louder, “In the Name of  Jesus Christ, be gone!” she reached her hands above her head and, pushing more power out of her, she shouted, “In the Name of Jesus Christ, be gone!”

The Vaporizer started to panic, he rushed away from the scene as more and more light came out of her, everything became brighter and brighter…until finally, the White House was back to normal again. Exhausted; Sapphire fell.

Swoosh! Talila flew in and caught Sapphire on her back; Sapphire hugged her,

“Oh Talila, I was so scared!”

In response, Talila landed and hid her wings just before the president and his family entered,

“Who are you?” the president commanded.

“I-I was just leaving.” Sapphire stuttered as she walked past him to go outside.

“No horses in the White House!” the president called after her.

Sapphire and Talila stepped outside…only to be blinded by a dozen flashing lights, she squinted, and Talila shied away. Then the questions came,

“Who are you?”

You were just in the White House, does that mean you saved the president?”

“what’s your horse’s name?”

Did she save the president too?”

Camera flash.

“Where are you from?”

How did you get here?”

“Who are your parents?”

“Are you an orphan?”

Sapphire climbed on Talila’s back,

Flash, flash.

Talila walked through the crowd of people, when they had fought their way through, Talila galloped. When they were out of sight of people, Talila took to the sky.

“What was wrong with those people Talila?” Sapphire asked.

Talila neighed as if to say, I haven’t the slightest idea.

Sapphire shrugged it off, “Let’s go home.”

When Sapphire and Talila reached the woods behind their house, Talila landed and hid her wings, then horse and girl trotted out of the woods.

When Sapphire had untacked and groomed Talila, she put her horse back in her stall, gave her a treat with a pat, and walked in the house for lunch.

“Ah, Sapphire, there you are, you’re just in time for lunch,” her father stated.

“The newspaper just came a couple seconds ago.” Diane added.

“And I made some more coffee.”  Her mother put in.

“That’s good.” Sapphire said as she sat down.

Then, after they said grace, Sapphire’s father unrolled the newspaper and opened it, Sapphire glanced at the front page, then quickly busied herself with her breakfast-Talila and her were on the front page! She hoped her family wouldn’t notice; but, just then, Matthew looked up at the front page and gasped,

“Everyone, Sapphire and Talila are on the front page!”

Her mother and Diane looked up and also gasped, her father turned to the front page and read aloud,

“ ‘Young girl and horse are suspected for saving the president’s life from darkness.’ Hmm, that’s interesting.”

Everyone looked at Sapphire.

“Where were you this morning Sapphire?” her mother asked.

Sapphire considered telling her family the whole story about the Vaporizer, and how she stopped him, and how the president kicked them out of the White House, only to be blinded by lots of camera lights, but then she would have to explain how she and Talila got to the White House so fast-and she didn’t want to tell them that Talila could fly, then everyone would come buzzing in-so she simply said,

“Oh, I was just out in the woods.”

Well I was until the president got attacked. She added to herself.

“It must be someone who looked like Sapphire.” Diane finally said.

Maybe.

“It must be.” Sapphire agreed.

“But who has a horse like Talila?” Matthew asked.

Anybody.

Sapphire shrugged, “It could happen.”

Everyone shrugged and went back to their lunch; Sapphire was relieved.

Early the next day, Sapphire got up, got dressed, and went out to the barn to see Talila. The mare neighed when she sensed her owner nearby. Sapphire went into her stall and patted her,

“It all seems like a dream, doesn’t it Talila?”

                Talila whinnied in reply.

Sapphire smiled; she could always count on Talila to listen to her. Then, after giving Talila another pat, she fed and watered the rest of the horses; then she went back outside.

                “May Day! May Day!”

Sapphire whirled around to find her brother’s friend, Fredric, running towards her waving his arms.

“What’s wrong?” Sapphire asked when he reached her.

“An evil spirit is attacking Pittsburgh!”

All the color drained from her face, “A evil spirit, you said?”

Fredric nodded, “He was so dark, I can’t see any light at all in town.”

No, it couldn’t be. She was thinking, but she said out loud,

 “Let’s go tell my parents.”

                Fredric nodded and followed.

Her mother turned to her youngest daughter as she walked in, “There you are Sapphire!” she said at the same time Matthew said,

“Fredric! What a surprise, I didn’t know you were coming.”

Fredric’s face turned white, “Something’s attacking Pittsburgh! An evil, black, spirit!”

“Could that evil, black spirit be the ‘darkness’ that attacked the president yesterday?” Diane asked.

“It could be Diane,” her father said, “It could be.” Then he added, “Fredric, Matthew, and I will go check it out.”

No! No! You can’t! He’ll kill you!

Fredric stuttered, “I-I-someone needs to stay here with the womenfolk. Someone needs to protect them.”

Huh, I don’t need protected.

Mr. Caraway nodded, “Okay Fredric, you can stay.” Then Matthew and him, grabbed their guns and left.

Guns won’t stop the Vaporizer.

“May I go out to the barn?”

“Didn’t you feed all the horses?” Her mother asked.

“Yes, but I-I need to be alone.”

“Alright, but if you see any sign of darkness, come right back in the house.”

“Yes Mom.”

Then Sapphire left.

In the barn, Sapphire patted Talila,

“Oh Talila! This is all my fault! Why did I have to go and tell the Vaporizer where I lived?” Then she thought of something, “Wait! Talila; what if he’ll actually go and attack Buckingham Palace! What if he’ll attack the Japanese Emperor next? What if…”

Talila nudged her as if to say, slow down Sapphire.

Sapphire pat her again, “Sorry Talila, I guess I was going to fast for you; I’m just so worried.”

Talila nudged her again as if to say, we stopped him once, we can do it again!

Sapphire scratched her, “I think you’re right Talila, let’s go.” Then she climbed on her back and Talila took to the sky.

In the city, Sapphire and Talila coughed,

“I don’t know if this is from Pittsburgh’s usual fog or from the Vaporizer.” Then she added, “Let’s head to the Mount Troy Ballroom; it looks the darkest.”

Willingly, Talila did as she said.

When they got there, they heard cackling laughter. Talila landed and Sapphire got off, then she turned to the mare, “Stay outside Talila, when I need you, I’ll call you.”

Talila nodded, and Sapphire slowly walked inside the Ballroom; and that’s when she saw him-the Vaporizer-was right in the middle of the dance floor, cackling evilly.

“Care to dance?” The Vaporizer sneered.

“Whatever you’re planning, stop it!” Sapphire said bravely.”

“I’m not planning anything, I’m just taking your advice.”

Sapphire was silent, he’s right, he’s only here because I told him where I was.

The Vaporizer continued, “As soon as you said where you lived, I decided that Pittsburgh should be my next stop on the terror train.” He laughed evilly again as he said that.

That’s when Sapphire got mad, she shot her powers at the Vaporizer; caught off guard, it forced him into the wall. His face turned red,

“You think you’re so good, don’t you? Well take that!” he shoved his sorcery at her; but she dodged, throwing her magic back at him. Following suit, he did the same. The two powers met in the center.

“You cannot defeat me! Because no one is stronger, no one is greater, and no one is more powerful than the Vaporizer!” The Vaporizer declared.

“You’re wrong!”

“What?” The Vaporizer hissed.

“No one is more powerful than God. No one!” Sapphire preached. “No one is more powerful than He, no one is stronger than He, and no one is greater than He. If I can’t defeat you, than I know one person I can call on to help me; and that’s Jesus Christ.”

The Vaporizer shied away, Sapphire noticed this, and forced him away with her power, it flung against the wall like a rag doll. Sapphire waited for him to get back up and becoming even more angrier at her, but he never did, curiously, she crept towards him, it was then that she discovered something she never thought could happen: spirits can become unconscious too; or at least this one could.

Sapphire knew she should destroy him while she had the chance, but she hesitated; she never saw an unconscious spirit before, she wanted to examine him. Slowly and carefully, she crept closer, and closer, until finally, she was standing just above him. Then slowly and cautiously, she reached out her hand and touched him…

Suddenly, Sapphire was no longer in the Mount Troy Ballroom, and the Vaporizer was no longer in front of her. Instead, she was in a whirlwind of evil; but not just any evil, she was in pure evil: blackness was everywhere, but that couldn’t stop her from seeing the Vaporizer’s evil eyes, glaring right at her. All of a sudden, the evil eyes shot black lasers right at her. She was helpless to escape the blaze…

Then she was back in the Mount Troy Ballroom; but the Vaporizer was nowhere to be found.

“Welcome back to the real world.” A familiar voice sneered.

Sapphire’s powers glowed in her fists as she turned around.

“Did you enjoy your little trip to my mind?” The Vaporizer continued.

“What?”

The Vaporizer laughed again, “Didn’t your parents tell you, that if you touch a spirit, you get transported to his mind?”

Sapphire gritted her teeth, but said nothing.

“Nothing to say, hmm?” The Vaporizer laughed again. “You can never-”

Before the Vaporizer knew what was happening, Sapphire forced him against the wall again.

He got up growling, “You think you’re so good, don’t you?”

“You keep saying that, sometimes I wonder if you know what it means.” Sapphire responded wittily.

In response, he shot his magic at her, she did the same, saying out loud,

“In the Name of Jesus Christ, be gone!”

The Vaporizer tensed; but only a little.

“In the Name of Jesus Christ, be gone!” Sapphire repeated, The Vaporizer looked even more scared. “In the Name of Jesus Christ, be gone!”

No the Vaporizer was really terrified, “NOOOO!!!!!” He cried as he fled. “I’ll get you one day Sapphire Caraway! Mark me I will!”

And then he and the darkness was gone.

To exhausted to whistle, Sapphire called for Talila weakly, who galloped in the ballroom, Sapphire climbed on her back, patted her, and said, “Let’s go home Talila.”

Then Talila flapped her wings and took to the sky; for home.

That night, Sapphire snuck out of her house to the barn. When Talila saw her approach her stall, she whinnied softly. Sapphire stepped inside the 12’ by 12’ stall and pet the Friesian mare.

“I can’t believe I was inside the Vaporizer’s mind Talila. It doesn’t seem real.”

                Talila nickered.

“I wonder where he’ll strike next Talila?” Sapphire asked.

Talila nickered again as if to say, wherever he does, we’ll be ready!

Sapphire smiled, “Yes we will Talila, yes, we, will.”

The next morning at breakfast, Mr. Caraway reported what happened at Pittsburgh the other day,

“I have never since so much blackness in my lifetime.”

                I agree. Sapphire said silently.

Matthew nodded in agreement.

“Did you get the spirit?” Diane asked eagerly.

                No.

Mr. Caraway sighed, “I’m afraid not. But the oddest thing happened when we neared the Mount Troy Ballroom.” Sapphire gulped, but no one noticed. “We were just about to open the doors when it started to get brighter, and brighter, until finally, the city was back to normal again.”

“I wonder what happened?” Mrs. Caraway asked.

                You’ll never know.

“But on our way back here, we saw a black speck flying in the sky.” Mr. Caraway added, “It was to big to be a bird.”

“It looked like a horse.” Matthew said, Sapphire froze. “But everyone knows horses can’t fly.”

Everyone nodded in agreement as Sapphire breathed a sigh of relief.

Suddenly, Mr. Caraway threw down his napkin, “You know what? We’re taking a vacation; a vacation away from all this evil.”

“Ohh! To England I hope!” Diane swooned.

Mr. Caraway nodded, “To England, and to Japan.”

“Can we brings our horses?” Sapphire asked; it would be great to forget all about the Vaporizer.

Mr. Caraway shook his head, “No, not this time. I’ll ask the Perkins to take care of them.”

The next morning, the Caraways said good-bye to their farm and neighbors and headed off to the airport. As they waited to board the plane that would take them to England, Sapphire thought about the Vaporizer, who created him? And what did they want?

“Sapphire! Diane! Matthew! It’s time to go!” Her mother called, “Come on! Hurry or we’re be late!”

Sapphire jumped up, grabbed her luggage and hurried to the runway.

◘◘◘

Later, the Caraways were settled in their hotel, then they set off to explore the sights; the days went by so fast; soon a week has past.

Although Sapphire admitted that she did enjoy herself, she still missed Talila.

If only she were here. Sapphire thought to herself.

Suddenly, Diane let out a squeal, “Ohh!” she exclaimed, pointing to a tall building in front of them, “It’s Buckingham Palace!”

Sapphire was excited, “Do think we can have a tour?”

                Matthew nodded, “Yup,”

                Sapphire smiled, “Then let’s go!”

Mr. Caraway shook his head, “It’s too much money.”

Suddenly, Sapphire heard a neigh-she knew it was crazy, but it sounded like Talila.

“I’ll be right back,” she called back to her family, as she rounded a corner into an empty alley. She gasped-it was Talila!

                “Talila! Did you fly here?”

Talila nodded; then her ears pricked up and she whinnied. Sapphire looked up-but all she saw was darkness.

                Uh oh.

She climbed on Talila, “he’s headed for Buckingham Palace!”

                Talila flew up just in time to see the royal family scurry from the palace, Sapphire motioned Talila to fly a little lower so she could hear;

“What is that thing?” the queen demanded, “It took out all of my guards!”

Suddenly, the duchess whirled around, “George! William, I have to get George!”

The duke stopped her, “No, you can’t go in there-it’s dangerous!”

                “But what about our baby?”

“He’s fine-I’ll bring him to you,” Sapphire called through the darkness as she and Talila swooped inside the palace and climbed up the grand staircase.

As Talila passed each room, Sapphire looked and listened for the child-finally, she found him. She had just picked him up when she heard the familiar, cackling laughter. Thinking fast, she tied the baby prince safely to Talila’s back and said,

“Take him to the Duchess, Talila.”

Talila whinnied and walked carefully-but quickly-away.

Meanwhile, Sapphire took a deep breathe and headed for the ballroom, where the voice was coming from.

The Vaporizer smirked when he saw her,

“I knew you would show up eventually-you’re just the little miss hero, aren’t you? Well sorry to tell you, but I’ve gotten stronger since we’ve last met-you have nothing against me!”

Then he shot his evil magic at her-but Sapphire dodged. Then she shot her own magic at him-the powers met in the middle.

                Suddenly, the Vaporizer abruptly threw up his hands and rose to the sky;

“Blah, why must I bother here? I have better places to destroy!”

Sapphire watched him go, “Is he following me?”

◘◘◘

After their two weeks of England were over, the Caraways boarded a plane, then landed in Japan for two weeks learning the Japanese culture.

After Sapphire defeated the Vaporizer in England, Talila flew back home; but with promise that she would come back if Sapphire needed her again.

The first week went by fast, so half of the second week were already gone, when Matthew decided he wanted to see the palace where Emperor Kinjō lived. The family agreed and took the bus to the palace.

While the rest of the family awed at the beauty of the palace, Sapphire heard a whinny in an alleyway and went inside;

“Talila!” Sapphire hugged her horse, then it struck her, if Talila was here then that meant…

“Ha-ha, ha!”

Sapphire climbed on Talila and they flew up into the darkness of the palace where the Vaporizer was.

Once they were inside the palace, Sapphire heard a scream-it sounded like a man. Sapphire and Talila rushed towards the palace just as the emperor and his guards ran out screaming.

Talila landed behind the palace, Sapphire jumped off and headed inside, Talila tried to follow, but Sapphire stopped her,

“No, Talila. Stay out here, I don’t want you getting hurt.”

Talila seemed sad as Sapphire headed inside, but she stayed put.

                Sapphire looked around, then she listened for the evil laughter;

                “Ha-ha, ha!”

There it was. It was coming from-The Throne Room.

                Sapphire hurried right over there.

The Vaporizer smiled evilly when he saw her, “Hello, Sapphire; I’ve been expecting you.”

Sapphire threw her powers at him, he threw his own right back at her. She tried to throw some more of her magic back at him-but suddenly, her powers quit. The Vaporizer-seeing Sapphire having trouble with her powers-threw her to the ground.

                The Vaporizer stood over her;

“Not so tough now, are you? Now that your powers are gone-I can finally finish you off for good!”

The Vaporizer raised his hands over his head to strike that killing blow, Sapphire closed her eyes and prayed. Then she turned and looked the Vaporizer right in the eye and said:

                “Jesus.”

Just as his powers hit her-then everything went black.

◘◘◘◘

                Sapphire woke up with a muzzle nuzzling her face, she waved it away;

“Talila,” then her eyes snapped open, and she saw Talila for the first time, she hugged her, “Oh, Talila!” then she looked around-they were in the Caraways’ pasture in the good old USA. Sapphire blinked, she couldn’t explain it-but she knew that the Vaporizer was gone, and her family was safe-it was like they had never left America.

Sapphire looked at her hands and sighed-that’s why she had her powers-to defeat him-and now that he was gone…

She tried to use her powers, but it wouldn’t work, then Talila neighed, Sapphire looked at her: Talila still had her wings! Sapphire climbed on her back and Talila took to the sky. Sapphire whooped and howled: she may not have superpowers, but she had an awesome experience that she would never forget.

                Never ever.

The End.
